DAMASCUS – First Lady of Syria, Asma al-Assad, the wife of President Bashar al-Assad has been diagnosed with leukemia,(blood cancer) shortly after it was disclosed that she had breast cancer.

She was born in 1975 as Asma al-Akhras in London to the family of Fawaz al-Akhras, a cardiologist, her mother is a diplomat.

Asma studied in England, where she grew up with her parents but studied Arabic after her marriage to Bashar al-Assad. Her family professes Sunni Islam.

She is from Homs with a Circassian root.
