BERLIN – Germany goalkeeper Merle Frohms believes that equal pay for women and men in professional football is “utopian.”

“I don’t know if we will ever really get there,” the 29-year-old told the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Friday.

She does not believe that women’s football is well advised to “strive for everything that men’s football has achieved.”

The Euro runner-up added: “But we do bring a lot of things to the table that are often criticized as lacking in men’s football: in terms of closeness to the fans and role models.”

Lots could still improve in the women’s game, though.

“You have to create the best conditions for the players: a good training ground, good medical care,” said the Wolfsburg stopper, whose club side have dominated in recent years along with Bayern Munich and a distant Eintracht Frankfurt.

“And within the league, it has to be exciting so you don’t just have three top clubs playing for the championship, but that every matchday is exciting and there are no certain wins.”
