LAGOS, Nigeria – Senior lawyers have called for class action against the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC and other state government agencies like the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA for contravening vehicles with faded plate numbers.

The lawyers, including a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, who spoke to SCMTV, operated by www.starconnectmedia.com said that the FRSC and other government agencies are going beyond limits and what is prescribed by law for contravening vehicles for faded plate numbers issued by the Federal Government and State Government agencies.
According to them, the faded plate numbers were issued by the Federal Government and state government agencies through their contractors, whom they argued are to blame and not the innocent Nigerians who parted with their hard earned money only to be issued substandard plate numbers by government agencies.
Our investigations revealed that Faded Plate Number is not among the 30 offences captured in the Second Schedule of the FRSC Act 1990 as amended in 2007.
What is captured in item 6 is Vehicle Number Plate Violation, which in the eyes of the law has nothing to do with faded plate numbers but plate numbers fabricated outside what is issued by the Federal Government and other government agencies.
One of the lawyers, Hanacho Alozie argued that this Faded Plate Number is another area where government agencies are making ordinary Nigerians to pay for the failures of government.
He proposes a class action if the FRSC and other state government agencies continue to contravene vehicle for faded plate number plates.
“I will propose a class action against the Federal Government to compel them to act in the most responsible manner”, he said.
S.O. Adewale believes that what government is doing is nothing but extortion and wonders why government is doing this at a time when Nigerians are battling to survive the harsh economic condition.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Agweh averred that the FRSC erred in making Nigerians to pay for perceived offence outside the FRSC Act committed by the Federal Government.
According to him, the right thing for government to do is to request Nigerians with faded plate number to return them for re-issuance with a covering notes for those affected to be able to drive in the streets without being molested by overzealous government FRSC officials and state government officials.
