EKPOMA, Edo, Nigeria – The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mr. Philip Shaibu has called on security agencies to investigate those behind what he called cowardly attack on his supporters in Ekpoma, Edo State.

The attack occured immediately after campaign coordinator of the Deputy Governor finished addressing supporters in the area ahead of the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, coming up later in the year.

In a statement, the Deputy Government condemned the attack in the strongest terms, saying there was nothing on the ground to warrant such an attack.

“I hereby appeal to the security agencies in the state to carry out a thorough investigation into this attack. Those responsible for this dastardly act of cowardice must be brought to book and face the full weight of the law”, he said, stressing that the people of Edo State deserve to live in peace and security, adding that everything must be done to ensure that justice is served.

He assured his esteemed supporters, the good people of Edo State that his team will not be deterred by such acts of violence.

For him, this attack is not only an assault on democracy but also a threat to the peace and stability of Edo State.

“I urge all my supporters, as well as the good and peace-loving people of Edo State, not to allow themselves to be provoked by this attack. The perpetrators aim to incite violence and disrupt the peaceful atmosphere that we have worked hard to foster in our state”, Shabibu said.

He noted that the era of hooliganism and violence in politics is long gone. “Today, we live in a society where issues, ideas, and programmes should be the driving force behind political engagements.

“We must not be drawn into the dark abyss of violence and chaos, but rather, we should focus on engaging in constructive debates and discussions that will move our state forward”, he said.
