AWKA, Nigeria – Anambra State government has warned members of the Anambra Vigilante Group, AVG not be involved in debt recovery while discharging their legitimate duties
According to the spokesman of AVG Mr. Nweke Nweke on Tuesday, the state government frowned at some members of the group being used by individuals for debt recovery.
He said that any person caught engaging in such an act will be dealt with decisively.
Nweke said the warning followed several reports from different communities, alleging that some members of the local security outfit engage in debt recovery.
He advised the members of AVG to always stay within the rules of engagement while discharging their legitimate duties.
The group spokesperson stated that the primary assignment of AVG was to assist other security agents in curbing the menace of criminal activities in their respective localities .
“It is clear, we are not a debt recovery outfit. Our major duty is to nose down, report any suspicious movement, assist the police and other security agents in apprehending criminals as well as handing over anyone arrested to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
“Henceforth, anyone caught engaging in debt recovery will be dealt with decisively,” he warned. He also cautioned President General of communities not to use members of the AVG as a debt recovery agent, noting that the local security outfit responsibility is to assist other security agents in the fight against crimes and criminality.
According to him, using AVG men as debt recovery outfit might lead to the security outfit losing its credibility.
Nweke also appealed to the members of the public to volunteer useful information that will assist the group in discharging its duties effectively.
