BERLIN, Germany – A mass brawl at a school in Berlin between pupils left numerous people injured, including the 52-year-old school principal who tried to break up the fight.

The principal was shoved and broke her hand while trying to pull apart brawling youths, police said on Tuesday morning. The brawl occurred around 10:30 am (0930 GMT) on Monday morning at a school in the Neukölln district.

Other teachers and police officers were also attacked while trying to end the fights, according to police.

The fight initially broke out between five teenagers, aged 14 and 15, according to police. One pupil allegedly sprayed irritant gas, but ran into the gas cloud himself. Another pupil got hold of the spray, attacked the other side with it and the brawl escalated from there.

Police said the conflict broke out for rather banal reasons and was not related to political tensions.
