EFFURUN, Delta, Nigeria – Afrobeats crooner David Adeleke, better known as Davido is currently entangled in a legal brawl with former President of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, Mr. Amaju Pinnick.
A lawsuit totaling N2.3 billion has been filled against him and his music label, Davido Music Worldwide Limited, by Brownhill Investments Company Limited and its Chairman, Amaju Pinnick.
This breach of contract deal is undergoing hearing at a Delta State High Court, sitting in Effurun.
The lawsuit stems from Davido’s alleged failure to perform at the 19th edition of the “Warri Again” event on October 6, 2023, despite receiving US$94,500 (N70 million equivalent) as advance payment.
Additionally, Pinnick and his company assert incurring an extra $18,000 in expenses for a chartered private jet that Davido and his team were meant to use, yet Davido did not show up for the event.
During the court proceedings, Davido’s legal representative filed a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction to handle the case.
Davido contends that the matter primarily concerns debt recovery and insists that the claimants should have issued a formal demand letter before resorting to legal action.
Moreover, Davido refutes the involvement of music executive Sosoberokon as his agent, denying any contractual negotiations conducted on his behalf by Soso.
In response to the allegations, Davido clarifies that he did not receive payment for the performance but acknowledges the $94,500 payment, stating it was specifically for promotional purposes related to the event.
This legal saga showcases a dispute centered on contractual obligations, payment disputes, and differing perspectives on the nature of the funds exchanged, raising complexities within the entertainment industry and the intricacies of performer agreements.
