BERLIN – Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher said he never felt his last name was a burden because his father, seven-time world champion Michael, “never put that pressure on me.”

“Dad always told me to not even think about it and to make the best of what we have,” he told Sky Sport show Hardenacke trifft…, which will air on Saturday.

Michael Schumacher supported his son since his start in karting and Mick said he’s grateful for the advice he received from his father.

“Without his involvement and advice, I certainly wouldn’t be here,” the Mercedes driver said.
“The exchange was always in such way that he tried out different tactics. Sometimes he was very strict, sometimes not strict at all and just see what I would respond to,” he explained.

“I loved the ups and downs and the inconsistencies because it’s the same in motorsport,” he said.

Schumacher added that “it was clear to me that dad was a racing driver. But how famous he was, of course, was not yet so clear.”

Schumacher won the Formula 2 title in 2020 and in the following year he joined Formula One team Haas, where he remained until 2022. He then moved to Mercedes as a reserve driver after his contract with Haas was not extended.

His father, meanwhile, has been shielded from the public eye since he suffered a severe brain injury in a skiing accident at the end of 2013.
