Labour embarks on warning strike

LAGOS, Nigeria- Organised labour, made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC have kicked off warning strike nationwide, in Lagos, River State, Asaba, Edo, Kaduna, Kano, etc protesting against the anti-people policies uploaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, drawing his attention to hardship in the country and calling for reversal of all anti-people policies fueling unparallel suffering among the Nigerian people.

In Abuja, the aggrieved workers have broken through barricades to voice their rejection of government policies and state their readiness to embarked on a far reaching strike if government fails to heed demands of workers.

Toping the list is arrangement to repair or build refineries to refined petrol products locally, reduction in cost of governance at all level and rejection of the plan by National Assembly to spend 70 + 40 billions Naira on profligacy while the masses are allowed to wallow in abject poverty

Specifically, organised labour is draw attention of government was drawn to the following:

1. Worsening economic situation in the country that was induced by the removal of fuel subsidy.
2. Rejection of the proposed introduction of VAT on AGO
3. Rejection of the Introduction of tuition fees in universities
4. Rejection of the increment of tuition fees in unity schools.
5. Issues generated as a result of total floating of the Naira without addressing how the supply of FX could be improved.
6. Rejection of the planned privatization of Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centers.
7. Rejection of any plan to increase electricity tariff.
8. The need to urgently address the Increasing cost of governance at all levels.
9. Rejection of the plan by NASS to spend 70 + 40 billions Naira on profligacy while the masses slide into abject poverty.
10. Rejection of the Proscription of RTEAN by Lagos state government amongst others.

Organised labour is of the view that the palliatives proposed by government is grossly inadequate when compared to the enormous challenges faced by the masses and that the government has not demonstrated any commitment to the reduction of cost of governance.

It noted that the political class is apathetic about making sacrifices, even as the masses have continued to tighten their belt.
