NIGER – Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf has proposed a six months transition period for Niger, using a transition council headed by a civilian.

Attaf made the proposal after a tour of three countries bordering Niger. Attaf spoke just as the Abdourahmane Tchiani led military junta had proposed to stay in power for three years before handing over to a civilian government.

Algeria, which had opposed military takeover in Niger however opposed military intervention in the region.

Attaff said the six months transition was necessary so that the coup that ousted Mohamed Bazoum does not become a fait accompli.

He believes that the transition council should formulate a political arrangement that would be acceptable to political parties in Niger.

It is not clear if this proposal will sit well with the military junta and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS which has been in favour of military intervention despite opposition even in Nigeria.
