BERLIN – Germany women’s team captain Alexandra Popp has become German female football player of the year by journalists in a vote organized by the Kicker sports magazine.
Germany women’s team captain Alexandra Popp has been chosen German female football player of the year by journalists in a vote organized by the Kicker sports magazine.
Popp won by a wide margin – 257 votes – ahead of VfL Wolfsburg team-mate Lena Oberdorf (39) and last year’s winner Lea Schüller (9) of Bayern Munich, Kicker said on Sunday.
This is the third time the 32-year-old striker wins the award after taking it home in 2014 and 2016.
“It’s a recognition of my performance in the past 12 months. It makes me really proud,” Popp said.
She was part of the Germany squad that reached the Euro 2022 final, won by England. At this year’s women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Germany were eliminated in the group stage, but Popp scored four goals.
“It’s a big disappointment for all of us and for German football. Our quality has not changed since last year. But it wasn’t the performance we imagined in all three group games, including against Morocco (which Germany won 6-0). That’s disappointing and annoying,” she said.
With Wolfsburg, she won the German Cup and reached last season’s final, in which the Germans were defeated by Barcelona. She was also the Bundesliga top scorer with 16 goals.
