LAGOS – Investigate Prosecute and Confiscate, IPC Justice has said that Nigeria needs to make an example of the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu if he is found to have subverted the will of the Nigerian people.
IPC explained in a statement that rigging election which amounted to subversion of the will of Nigerians is treason with death or life imprisonment as penalty.
Already facts before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT sitting in Abuja suggest that Yakubu intentionally subverted the will of Nigerians during the February 25 Presidential and House of Assembly elections.
“Nigerians need to understand without a doubt the consequences of betraying their country.
“Treason is a serious crime, and those who commit it should be held accountable. The penalty for treason in Nigeria is death or imprisonment for life.
“This is according to Section 38(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
“@inecnigeria Chairman Mr. Yakubu may have committed treason if he subverted the will of the people by doing something like rigging an election or otherwise interfering with the democratic process.
“Nigerians must make an example of Mr. Yakubu and his associates to make sure this type of action is never repeated in our history.
“They must all be held to the fullest extent of the law, no exceptions”, IPC said
