MALLORCA – German authorities are starting an investigation into a case of alleged gang rape by German tourists on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
“We will initiate an investigation,” said a spokesperson of the public prosecutor’s office in the western German city of Hagen on Thursday, in response to an inquiry by dpa.
However, information from the Spanish authorities is still needed. The public prosecutor’s office had contacted the Spanish authorities.

Five German men between the ages of 21 and 23 are accused of having raped a younger German woman last week or having stood idly by and watched.
The men were taken into custody on Mallorca. A sixth tourist from Germany who had been held was released from custody.
When Germans are suspected of committing a crime abroad, there is an obligation to investigate domestically, said senior public prosecutor Gerhard Pauli.
Meanwhile, a witness has come forward who had been sitting next to the five suspects in police custody for several hours and had overheard their conversations.
The man had contacted the police in Germany, said Pauli. He knows the statements of the witness, but cannot comment on them publicly.
