BERLIN – Germany’s Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth said she’s seen a “very positive start” for the country’s culture pass initiative for people who have clocked 18-years.

The Culture pass initiative, which uses an app to give €200 ($220) credit for cultural spending, allows the purchase of tickets to concerts, books, musical instruments, visits to the cinema and more.

Since the launch of the app in mid-June, more than 310,000 people who are 18-years old have registered. About 100,000 of them have activated the credit via electronic identification.

The pilot project is intended to make live cultural experiences financially easier for 18-year-olds after the pandemic.

The largest turnover was in the category “concert and stage.” According to the data, more than 95,000 reservations have been made, generating sales of about €1.8 million. “Books” and “cinema” featured to a lesser degree.

“It is a positive signal that young people are also using the culture pass for live culture, for concerts and stage performances,” Roth said. She said that shows that the culture pass was achieving the intended effect for the cultural sector.

By the end of the year, a total of around 750,000 people who were born in 2005 and will turn 18 this year will be able to access the offer.

The credit is to remain valid for two years. If successful, it could be extended to other age groups.
