DORTMUND – Borussia Dortmund have extended their contract with midfielder Emre Can until 2026, the Bundesliga club said on Saturday.

His previous deal was set to expire next year. Can moved to Dortmund from Juventus in 2020 for €25 million ($27.8 million). Last season, he became a strong defensive player under coach Edin Terzic.

“Emre has developed into the leading player we always saw in him. We appreciate his greed, his physicality and his absolute will to win every game, not only at Borussia Dortmund but also at the national team,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.

Can added: I feel very comfortable here in Dortmund. In the past few months, I have definitely shown what I expect of myself and what the fans here expect of me.

“Dortmund and I are a good fit for each other. That’s why I want to stay here, work hard and help the team achieve our goals.”
