BERLIN – The German tourist industry has recovered to almost pre-pandemic levels following strong growth, according to statistics released on Tuesday.

Hotels, guesthouses and the like recorded 40.2 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests, the Federal Statistical Office said, on the basis of preliminary results.

That is a 12.4% increase compared to a year earlier and was only 0-2% fewer stays than in April 2019, before the pandemic began.

The number of overnight stays by domestic guests rose by 9.9% year-on-year in April to 33.9 million. This was 2.6% more than in April 2019.

In contrast, cross-border tourism in Germany continued to lag behind the levels seen before the coronavirus.

A total of 6.3 million overnight stays by travellers from abroad were counted, 13.2% fewer than in the same month before the crisis.

The statistics are based on establishments with at least 10 beds or spaces at camp sites.
