KENYA – A high court sitting Shanzu province, Kenya will on Monday rule on prayers of the Kenya Police to detain Pastor Paul Mackenzie of the Goodnews International Church for 30 days pending investigation into his alleged involvement in terrorism, leading to deaths of over 200 followers.
By Sunday, April 23, a total of 39 bodies, among his followers who fasted to death in order to meet the lord have been exhumed from mass graves .
On May 13, 2023 another 22 bodies were exhumed by detectives from mass graves in the Shakahola Forest, Kilifi County.
Pastor Paul Mackenzie who was arrested by the Kenya authorities immediately news of his activities came into the open was initially set free by a court sitting in Malinzi before his latest ordeal.
His wife, Rhoda Maweu has also been arrested from her hideout in coastal town of Mtwapa, after several weeks of hiding from authority.
Mackenzie founded the Good News International Church in 2003 in Malindi and amassed a lot of followership who believe in his teaching.
In 2017, he was arrested on charges of ‘radicalisation’ and ‘teaching in an unregistered institution’. He was tried and acquitted in October 2021.
Although his church now wears the look of an empty wharehouse, some of his followers interviewed on Aljazeera still believes in his teaching and ready to continue to fast until they meet the lord despite losing so much weight and almost on the verge of dying.
Some who have fasted till near death situation are said to be refusing treatment and determined to fast till the end.
