NUJ urges Soludo not to shut National Light Newspaper

AWKA, Nigeria – Anambra State Union of journalists NUJ has appealed to the governor of the state Prof Charles Soludo to reconsider his intention to shut the state newspaper, the National Light.

Recalled that there are believes in some quarters that the state government wants to shut the operation of the state owned newspaper

Anambra State NUJ in a Communique jointly signed by Chairman Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and Secretary comrade Aloysius Ofodile released after the June meeting, urged soludo to reconsider any intention to shut Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, ANPC ,Publishers of National Light Newspapers.

It stated that Soludo must not endanger the lives of those journalists and other staff in the employment, noting that journalists are critical for any society to thrive.

Anambra State NUJ said the governor must apply human face while deliberating on the issue of the National Light Newspapers.

“Government must consider the pains those in the employment will suffer if it shut down the newspaper company. It will create more problems for the state, especially now there is no work” it said .

Anambra State NUJ further stated that anyone or organization who constitutes nuisance for journalists carrying out their lawful duties in the state will be treated as an enemy of the Union.

“The Congress once again expressed its readiness to carry out their job as the mouthpiece of the people without fear or favour.

The Congress appreciated the efforts of the security agents in addressing the issue of the insecurity bedeviling the state and enjoined the security agents not to rest on their oars.
