Earmarks Lawyers Got Talent competition as special attraction

VICTORIA ISLAND, Lagos -The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law, NBA-SBL has earmarked pertinent areas of the Nigerian economy that needed urgent reforms to enthrone a vibrant economy during its 3-day conference in Lagos.

The 17th annual conference which has the theme, “The Nigeria Business Landscape- Priorities of Law, Policy and Regulation” will take place from July 5 to 7, 2023 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos, Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee and Treasurer of the council, Mrs Ayoyinka Olajide-Awosedo announced at a press briefing on Wednesday.

She said one of the objectives of the conference was how to set an agenda to revive the economy following the emergence of a new government in place.

Looking at the impact of technology, we will look at how Nigeria can benchmark herself with the developed countries. Outside of the sessions and networking opportunities, we have a regulatory clinic and we will be sponsoring 25 young lawyers to attend the conference

” The conference will also focus on what regulations are pertinent to revive our economy in order to encourage investors to attract talents. As lawyers, there are a plethora of laws that affect the economy and so we want to sit in the room with all the relevant stakeholders, industry regulators, policy makers and look at how to move our economy forward.

Olajide-Awosedo said the conference will explore recent developments in the Nigerian business law environment, how it has affected businesses and what needs to be done to help businesses thrive.

According to her, numerous activities have been set aside for the annual conference, among which is “lawyers got talent competition” with a cash prize for the winner.

She added that the conference would provide a platform for stakeholders in the Nigerian business environment to address issues that affect the business environment and by extension, businesses operating in it.

The Chairman of SBL, Dr Adeoye Adefulu, in his welcome address, said that the council has made various contributions to the development of the Nigerian economy and would continue to avail itself to serve the present government.

Adefulu said experts from the public and private sectors, business lawyers and other stakeholders in the business law environment would converge to discuss how the economic sector could be revived.

“We have regulatory interventions we shall be working with and we have also arranged internships programmes for lawyers with regulatory agencies as well,”he said.

The Chairman, Program and Content Sub Committee, Mr Oludare Sembore, in his remark, said that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would be the special guest of honor and chief host while many other dignitaries around the world in the economy sector would also grace conference.

“The NBA President, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, (SAN) and other senior members of the legal profession will also be in attendance. Other senior members of the bar, the bench and the chief economist from KPMG will also be in attendance.

“We shall also be having international speakers such as Dr. Folashade Adeyemo, an assistant professor in University of Liverpool and Dr. Timi Popoola, the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Ltd are also part of the panelists,”he said.

Sembore added that the conference would also focus on issues relating to agriculture, business, entertainment and the likes.

NBA-SBL remains a converging point for decision makers in both the public and private sectors, policy formulators, regulators and industry practitioners seeking solutions to the myriads of challenges limiting businesses, since its inception in 2004.
