BERLIN – Germany’s Interior Ministry has recorded 580 criminal offences by the climate activist group Last Generation, according to a report in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
“740 people have come to the attention of the police” since the beginning of 2022, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the newspaper. Most of the offences concern coercion and damage to property, she said in the comments published on Sunday.
“We do not accept that activists should be allowed to violate the rights of others,” she said, arguing that actions which annoy the public only serve to hinder acceptance of the group’s ideas. She defended police intervention and the convictions of certain activists.
Last Generation has made headlines with street blockades involving activists gluing their hands to the road, and with attacks on works of art. It demands faster action from the government on climate change.
