BERLIN – Chancellor Olaf Scholz has assured President Volodymyr Zelensky of Germany’s support in combatting the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We will support you for as long as it is necessary,” Scholz said on meeting Zelensky in his chancellery in Berlin. “This solidarity is lasting and it is strong.”

While Russia’s merciless 444-day war of aggression had major geopolitical consequences, it affected primarily the Ukrainian people, the German chancellor said.

He noted that Germany had provided military and humanitarian assistance to date to the amount of €17 billion ($18.6 billion).

Zelensky expressed his thanks to Germany as he signed the visitor’s book at the official Berlin residence of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

“In the most challenging time in the modern history of Ukraine, Germany proved to be our true friend and reliable ally, which stands decisively side-by-side with the Ukrainian people in the struggle to defend freedom and democratic values,” Zelensky wrote in English.

He continued: “Together we will win and bring peace back to Europe. Thank you, Mr. Federal President, for your personal support of Ukraine and hospitality, and the German people, for fantastic solidarity.” He concluded: “Glory to Ukraine. Danke Deutschland.”
