BELGRADE, Serbia – A thirteen year old boy has opened fire on pupils learning at a school in Belgrade, killing eight of his colleagues and a school guard.
According to local police, the boy killed his victims with the semi automatic weapon licensed to his father. Crime of this nature is very rare in Serbia.
We gathered that the teenager who has been arrested personally called the police after the shooting spree.
He was subsequently arrested but the police say he will not be prosecuted since he is below the age stipulated by law.
The young boy, names withheld is said to have made sketches of his targets but the school authority say they cannot fathom his motive for the shooting.
The shooter first killed one of the school guards and then three students in a hallway, according to senior police official Veselin Milic. He then entered a history classroom close to the school entrance and opened fire again, Milic said. Seven girls and one boy were killed, he said.
The victims included a girl with French citizenship, French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre said in a statement. She provided no other details.
