AWKA, Anambra – Poor drainage system and distortion of town planning in Awka Anambra Central are now threatening the Enugu , Onitsha expressway in Kwat.
Our reporter who visited a gully erosion site at Kwat in Awka South , discovered that people have blocked the Eyi -Agu River with refuse and water and in the process endangering buildings and encroaching on the expressway.
One of the residents Mr Nweke Micheal who spoke to our reporter said that the poor channelization of water and drainage is serious threat to people and their property.
He said people are blocking the drainage, especially since governor Soludo removed Dustin sites in the state
“You can see that this is water way and people have built on top of the water ,you know water must find it way and finding its way, it must destroy some buildings and the roads. Look at the gully here it is already eating off the expressway ” he said .
He called on the government to urgently intervene to save the ugly situation before it cut off the expressway.
A staff of Anambra drainage management system, who never wanted his name on print said that government is doing much to clear the drainage.
According to him, many people wrongly built on water ways and dump refuse on wrong places, even on rivers and it is a problem the government is having.
