LIV-golfer Kaymer may quit DP World Tour
TULSA – Martin Kaymer could become the next high-profile golfer to quit the DP World Tour as he wants to have a chance to play at tournaments in his native Germany.
Kaymer and others are suspended from the Tour after joining the rival Saudi-backed LIV circuit last year.
Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood und Ian Poulter have recently quit the DP World Tour, and Kaymer could be next.
The two time major winner told dpa he is weighing his options ahead of next month’s BMW International Open in Eichenried near Munich.
“If I resign now I am no longer officially a member and therefore I could be given an invitation for the tournament. But that then depends on the promoter and sponsor,” Kaymer said.
Kaymer will likely not play at another German event, the June 1-4 European Open in Winsen near Hamburg because he doesn’t expect to be invited there if he gives up his DP World Tour membership.
“The German tournaments were always important for me and just find it very sad that I am now excluded,” Kaymer said.
Kaymer is currently playing at an LIV event in Tulsa but has cancelled his appearance at next week’s PGA Championship owing to wrist problems.
