MUNICH – Werder Bremen are planning to extend the contract of coach Ole Werner after he helped the team to avoid relegation to the second division.
“We would like to extend his contract. Our goal is to have this matter settled before the start of the next season,” Bremen head of football and scouting Clemens Fritz told the news portal Deichstube on Monday.
Bremen secured their stay in the Bundesliga after a 1-1 draw with Cologne on Saturday and Werner’s contract was automatically extended until 2024.
However, the club now wants to negotiate a new deal of at least two years.
“We’re in advanced talks with him, even though nothing is perfect yet,” Fritz said.
Werner moved to Bremen in November 2021 after working eight years at Holstein Kiel. In his first season with the team, he led them back to the Bundesliga after relegation in the 2020-21 season.
