DORTMUND – Former Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder Kevin Großkreutz will move down another tier and continue his career in the sixth division from next season onwards.

Großkreutz, 34, will join Wacker Obercastrop near his birth town of Dortmund in summer, the club said late Monday.

Großkreutz currently plays for fifth division Bövinghausen where he lost his position as player-coach after being red carded in the last game for losing his temper. He will however complete the season there as a player.

Once hailed as a big talent, Großkreutz played for Dortmund between 2009 and 2015, winning two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup with them.

He earned six Germany caps in the period and was a non-playing member of the squad that won the 2014 World Cup.

Großkreutz later spent a year at Turkey’s Galatasaray without playing a game, returned to Germany to join VfB Stuttgart, where his contract was terminated after a bar fight, one of several off the pitch controversies during his career.

He ended his professional career in 2021 before joining Bövinghausen who were then in the sixth tier.
