IKEJA, Nigeria – The Lagos State Ministry of Education has ordered the temporary closure of Chrisland School, Opebi-Ikeja, following the death of Adesola Whitney Adeniran.
A statement by the State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo said the closure was ordered pending the outcome of a full investigation into the unfortunate incident.
Mrs. Adefisayo, on behalf of the State Ministry of Education, commiserated with Mr. and Mrs. Adeyemi, parents of Whytney, and prayed for the repose of her soul.
“We also note the impact of this unfortunate event on family, friends and acquaintance of Whytney and call for calm as we assure that no effort will be spared in investigating the incident”, the Commissioner stated.
Adesola Whitney Adeniran, twelve year old girl slumped and died on February 9th during Interhouse Sports games at Agege Stadium, Lagos.
Narrating her ordeal, Whitney’s mother Blessing Adeniran said the was told at the hospital that Whitney her first daughter died of cardiac arrest.
“She was not taken to hospital but immunization centre and the doctor in the hospital told me she was dead on arrival. There was no first aid on the child. Nobody has told me what happened to my daughter up till now, they were at my house yesterday, all they said is she slumped.
“Chrisland is not telling me anything. She died out of carelessness, no ambulance, no medical doctor on the ground, she was drenched with water, who poured water on my daughter?
“You will tell me what happened to my daughter. They killed my child. I need closure to bury my daughter. If you are a mother and has a child in Chrisland, help me ask your child what they know about it on the 9th of February.
Blessing Adeniran, who said she did not attend last year event said she arrived Agege Stadium before the Interhouse Sports game commenced on February 9 and that the school principal who spoke to her was very casual about it when she was told her daughter fainted.
“ I was there earlier, match past started, first second, and third house matched, I did not see my daughter, the Queen’s entourage matched, I did not see my child, the art and craft group matched, I did not see her”, she said, adding that worried about the development, she decided to visit the area the children were kept where she saw the driver who confirmed Whitney was brought to the stadium.
“Meanwhile before I got to where they were kept, a bus speed past me at an unusual speed. At the children side, I was told that a girl fainted and that they have taken her to the hospital.
“I told them I am looking for my daughter, Whitney, and a boy said the girl that fainted is Whitney, and I brought out my phone and showed the boy who confirmed it , and a woman said she was standing here and she slumped, and I poured water on her. There was no medical arrangement in case of emergencies”, the mother who was weeping profusely said on video which has gone viral.
“So it occurred to me that it was my child that was in the bus”, she said adding that she was told that Whitney will be fine and that she fell and was taken to the hospital.
