ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Aguluri community in Anambra East, the home town of former Governor of the State, Chief Willie Obiano boils as gunmen stormed the area on Saturday .
We gathered the gunmen who were suspected to be cult members invaded the community at about 8:30am. An eyewitness said the gunmen and security operatives engaged themselves in gun battle for about an hour.
According to eyewitness, the gunmen stormed Aguleri community and started shooting none-stop until policemen arrived.
Some policemen and gunmen were injured during the gun battle, but nobody was killed.
However, no fewer than 15 persons have been arrested by policemen.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the incident but denied the claim that policemen were injured.
According to him, they were not gunmen, but some cult groups. According to the him ” the situation has been brought under control, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police , Echeng Echeng.
“The deputy commissioner of Police in charge of operations, led police operatives to the scene and prevented the youths from attacking the police station.
“We have made some arrests, in fact, over 15 persons were arrested and we recovered some dangerous weapons”, he said, adding that other means of resolving the conflict has been put in place to hear from the aggrieved youths. We have also intensified patrols in the area, aimed at enhancing peace and safety please”, he said.
