Oyo State Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan has been impeached by the Oyo State House of Assembly. He was impeached following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressive Congress, APC.
Recall that the Seyi Makinde led PDP government had set up a 7-man committee to investigate allegation of corruption against the deputy governor after he joined the APC.
The committee was set up last week and not up to 21 days required by the constitution besides, he was not given opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The committee presented its report during plenary on Monday. According to Majority leader of the house, Hon Sanjo Adedoyin, the seven-man panel found the Deputy Governor guilty of all the allegations leveled against him.
All the 23 PDP lawmakers at the plenary voted in support of the recommendations of the panel.
Olaniyan was elected into office in 2019 with Governor Seyi Makinde under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. Relationship between the governor and his deputy fell apart earlier this year before he left for the PDP.
The deputy governor may be heading to court to restore his mandate
