LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA has welcomed the appointment of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, following the retirement of the former CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad for health reasons.
In a statement, President of the NBA, Mr. Olumide Apata said it is however impossible to consider the retirement of Tanko Muhammad in isolation of the recent unprecedented development at the Supreme Court where 14 justices censured the former CJN over his handling of welfare of judicial officials and other issues.
He noted that there is a near universal agreement that public confidence in the judiciary and the legal profession is at an all-time-low.
According to him, there is now more than ever, the need for urgent reforms in the judiciary and to rebuild the almost dilapidated confidence that Nigerians have in the judiciary and the wider legal profession in Nigeria.
“These should form the immediate first tasks for the Honourable Mr. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola”, he said, pledging the readiness of the NBA to work with him in cleansing the Augean Stable and addressing the ills that have continued to plague not just the judiciary but the entire legal profession.
