NEW YORK – Unless former President of the United States, Donald Trump accedes to request of to turn in files requested in the probe into his business, he will in no distant future suffer losses in his business.
For his failure to yield, Justice Arthur Engoron, of a U.S court ordered him to pay a fine of $10,000 daily until he complies with the order to turn in the requested files.
Donald Trump Jnr, the 45th President of the United States is worth $3billion based on Forbes estimate in 2022.
New York Attorney General Letitia James had asked the court to hold Trump in contempt after he missed a March deadline to present certain documents needed for his probe. Mr Trump’s lawyer said she would appeal the ruling.
“Everything that your honour and the attorney general said that we haven’t done – we have done,” attorney Alina Habba said in court. After a “very diligent” search, there were simply no more relevant documents to provide, she said.
A democrat, Ms Letita James has in an inquiry in 2019 claimed that Trump, a Republican inflated the value of his assets to banks when seeking loans prior to when he took office as U.S President.
Justice Engoron said the contempt finding became necessary because of “repeated failures” to hand over the requested materials.
“Mr Trump… I know you take your business seriously, and I take mine seriously. I hereby hold you in civil contempt,” he said, though the former president was not in court.
