CAPE TOWN, South Africa – All roads lead to Cape Town, South Africa, tomorrow Saturday, where Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be buried.
He died just a day after Christmas at the age of 90. His burial rites started earlier in the week and will culminate in his interment tomorrow.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be remembered for his struggle for a free South Africa in the apartheid era and remained the rallying point for South Africans after the demise of former South African leader, the Late Nelson Mandela.
Expected at the burial are leaders from South Africa and around the world who will visit to pay their last respect to the man whose fight for peace transcended South African shores.
Desmond Tutu was born October7, 1931 and died December 26, 2021. Desmond Tutu who was the Archbishop of Cape Town was also Chairman of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Committee that resolved issues of racial prejudice during white minority rule when Nelson Mandela became President.
He was married to Nomalizo Leah Shanxane and together they had four children. He was educated at the Pretoria Bantu Normal College, University of South Africa, (BA), St Peter’s Theological College, and Kings College, London.
Archbishop Mpilo Desmond Tutu was ordained as a Deacon in 1960. He became priest a year later. In 1976, he was consecrated. Desmond Tutu who retired in 1996 also served as Bishop of Lesotho and Johannesburg.
