ONITSHA, Anambra – The governorship candidate of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for Anambra governorship on November , Dr. Obiora Okonkwo broke down in tears on Wednesday, when he visited Okpoko community to flag off construction of a multi million naira road project.
The proposed project was Ede road, School Road/ Awalite and Ojoto street retiring at Owerri road in Okpoko community, Ogbaru local government area of the state. Okonkwo could not hold himself in tears shortly after the project flag off and saw a breastfeeding mother in mid 30s who stumbled into a ditch when she could not pass through the bad road in the area.
Our reporter gathered that the young mother named Amarachi Nwachukwu was on her way to buy a bag of sachet water which she will sell to feed her family ,when she tripped with her baby strapped on her back
Narrating her condition to journalists, Mrs Nwachukwu said: “I borrowed N200 from a good Samaritan to buy a bag water to sell so as to feed my child because we have not eaten for two days. I was on my way to the shop before I lost control and fell down.”
However, fate smiled on the woman when Okonkwo, the Chairman of the United Nigeria Airlines through his pro value Humanity foundation renewed her hope and gave her the sum of N200,000 to start up business of her own and to fend for her family.
Speaking shortly, the ZLP flag bearer stated that the people of the state had been subjected to untold hardship due to the failure of the state government to impact on the well being of the people.
According to him, ” We saw the woman fell possibly as a result of starvation and we bought food for her. When we discovered that she couldn’t eat, we fed her and the child by our self. We also raised 200,000 through my foundation for her to start a petty business.
“This is the condition of people of the state. If we had not come here, we wouldn’t know that that there are people created by God and who live in penury under the leadership of this current administration. Some people cannot afford a meal. If this incident can happen before us, that means there are thousands of others who are languishing in poverty in the neighborhood.
“The APGA administration has gone so bad in the state. No matter how much campaign they indulge in, 16 years is enough to have turned Anambra into a modern state,” he said.
Reacting to the new project, the president general of the community, Francis Enemuo said the project was a divine intervention from the business man and prayed that God give him victory to do more for the people of the state.
