IKARE-AKOKO, Ondo, Nigeria – The Director, Legal Unit, National Youth Service Corps, Barrister Ahmed Ibrahim Tijani has tasked corps members to put on their thinking cap and be more interested on how to meaningfully contribute to national development rather than display frustration and blame others for their misfortune.
The Director, Legal made the statement Monday evening when he addressed the 2021 Batch ‘B’ (Stream II) corps members deployed to Ondo State at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.
Barrister Tijani said that the corps members should develop ‘I can do it’ spirit to tackle the many challenges facing us as a nation. He said that the Federal Government through the noble Scheme is continuously assembling graduates from different backgrounds to come together and protect the unity which the founding fathers of this great nation fought for.
“Gentlemen corps members, your coming together to serve the nation under the mandatory one year service to the fatherland is an honour bestowed on you to collectively fashion out ways to accelerate national development through commitment and sacrifice”.
“I am impressed with the report reaching me from the State Coordinator and other camp officials that your set is the most disciplined in recent times and I want to give kudos to the camp administration for moulding you into better Nigerians”.
The Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court advised the members of the service corps not to ‘check out like Andrew’ but to remain in the country as the grass is not greener on the other side as they are made to believe.
The legal icon who has served on many panels and committees advised corps members to accept their postings without reservations as God has a reason for allowing such to happen.
“On the face of the law, it is an offence to reject or induce posting and this act is punishable in line with National Youth Service Corps Act Cap N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. I want you to be conversant with this document and be guided in your actions as any untoward acts attract sanction. For instance, Section 13 paragraph 2 part said that anyone who is not eligible to participate in the service corps but participates or attempts to participate is guilty of an offence”.
According to the Director, any person liable on conviction will pay a fine of #4,000.00 or to imprisonment for a term of two (2) years or both such fine and imprisonment.
Barrister Tijani who is a member of many professional bodies and a traditional title holder of Onoguvo 1 of Igaraland advised corps members to submit to the rules and regulations at their places of primary assignment.
Barrister Tijani, who also addressed members of staff, thanked them for diligently implementing the policies of the NYSC Scheme.
While charging the workforce to shun all acts capable of subjecting the lofty objectives of the Scheme to public ridicule, he appealed to them to have a forgiving spirit as this would guarantee them inner peace and joy.
In her brief welcome address, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani said that the camp is peaceful and that there is no threat or security breach in and around the camp. The State Coordinator gave the statistics of disposition of both corps participants and camp officials and thanked the Director for coming to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko.
