KADUNA, Nigeria – The embattled leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria(IMN), Shiekh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat Ibrahim have been set free by a Kaduna State High Court.
They were set free by Justice Gideon Kurada, who upheld the no-case submission filed by the defendants through their lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN. The Kaduna State Government had filed charges of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace against the defendants.
Ruling on the matter, Justice Gideon held that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendants and decided to free them of all charges.
El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat Ibrahim have been on trial in the past four years on an eight-count charge of culpable homicide, disruption of public peace and unlawful assembly.
The defendants were brought to court on Wednesday morning by officials of the Nigerian Correctional Services under tight security. Earlier in July, Femi Falana had told the court that all the 15 witnesses presented by the prosecution counsel were unable to establish any nexus between the alleged crimes and Sheikh El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat.
