PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike has said that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government of Nigeria will be held responsible if the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom is assassinated.
Wike made the statement following Samuel Ortom’s allegation that the Fulanis have earmarked him for assassination after a gang of armed Fulani headers laid ambush for his convoy, attacked his convoy and security personnel, forcing him to flee on foot for more than one and half a kilometer.
Wike said that the Federal Government should know that there will be no Nigeria if Ortom is killed, adding that it could lead to another civil war and that they should be prepared to bury Nigeria.
“The Federal Government would be held responsible if Governor Ortom is assassinated. If they kill Ortom, they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria. It could lead the nation to a civil war and they should be prepared to bury Nigeria”, he said.
Wike said it is not the first time that a sitting governor would be targeted for elimination.
“This is not a first, during the 2019 elections the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and @OfficialAPCNg Chieftains had concluded plans to assassinate me”, he said, adding that Nigeria has reached a low point such that even incumbent governors are brazenly threatened with death.
“We have gotten to such a low point where even incumbent Governors are brazenly threatened with death”, he said.
