LAGOS, Nigeria – The first consignment of the COVAX , one of the vaccines approved by the World Health Organisation, WHO has arrived Nigeria.The vaccine arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja aboard Emirates Airline earlier today just about 368 days after the Coronavirus pandemic was detected in Nigeria.

About 4 million doses of the vaccine landed at the airport.

“368 days after Nigeria detected her first case, we are pleased to receive our 1st shipment of 4million doses of #COVID19Vaccine. We are grateful to the #COVAX facility for this timely intervention”, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC has announced.

Arrival of the vaccine makes Nigeria the 3rd country in West Africa to receive it after Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

The arrival of the vaccine will enable the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to commence vaccination of Nigerians in priority groups, starting with  frontline healthcare workers, the World Health Organisation, (WHO), United Nations Children Education Fund(UNICEF) and NPHCDA have said in a joint statement.

Children under 18 are however not eligible for the vaccine.
