ANAMBRA, Nigeria -Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra Command has stated that it would carry out robust traffic management and controls at strategic places, where heavy vehicular movements occur in order to ease traffic congestion in all parts of the state this Christmas season.
The State Sector Commander, Mr Andrew Kumapayi stated this in Awka Anambra state while interacting with journalists on reparations of his organisation during the yuletide.
According to him, places like Bridgehead, Upper Iweka, Owerri Road axis all in Onitsha as well as other cities like Ekwulobia, Awka and Nnewi, are known for heavy gridlock during such festive periods. He said the traffic in the area are as result of an influx of citizens of the state from outside as well as the position of Anambra as the gateway into the Southeast region.
Kumapayi further disclosed that the robust traffic management and control activities would help to ensure that holiday makers and road users would not experience long hours of driving through gridlocks.
He said that two camps would be established for 24-hour traffic control operations and immediate response to road traffic crashes in the state.
“My Headquarters in Abuja has approved one camp for us at Onitsha but because we know our environment here and the traffic we usually experience during the yuletide, we decided to open a second one at Nteje.
“We hope to have our personnel there to offer services to road users day and night. This initiative also became necessary because we have realised that our people continue to travel at night and we can’t attend to them the way we should if we continue to run only day operations,” Kumapayi said.
He said a major focus during the command’s Operation would be to respond promptly to emergency situations on the roads such as road mishaps and removal of obstructions.
“We are partnering with the Anambra State Ministry of Health to be able to provide ambulance services for prompt evacuation of the injured persons during this season. What they will be providing is to augment what we have on ground. The objective is to respond immediately if there is a situation on the roads,” he said.
Kumapayi, also announced that the command would be working hard to realise the Corp’s target of reducing road traffic crashes by 15 per cent and fatality by 20 per cent through various internal measures. One of these measures, he stated, would be through quarterly road updates that would provide government information, where we identify very deplorable roads that constitute death traps for motorists.
He expressed happiness that such efforts would be yielding positive results, as work had since commenced on some Federal roads in the state.
