BORNO, Nigeria – Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has called for rejig of the nation’s security architecture following reports of the mass murder of not less than 43 rice farmers by terrorists in Zabarmari, Jere Local Government of Borno State.

This is  taking place as experts in nutrition have warned about imminent famine in Nigeria due to incessant attacks of farmers on their farmlands.

In a statement, Atiku said the development is heartbreaking and that words fail him. According to him, the lives of citizens should be worth more than what is taking place.

“Heartbreaking. Words fail me. The lives of our citizens should be worth much more than this. The rejig of the nation’s security architecture is long overdue. May their souls rest in peace and may their families be comforted”, Atiku said.

Reacting to the development, President Muhammadu Buhari  expressed  his grief over the killing of farmers on rice fields at Zabarmari, in Jere Local Government of Borno State, describing the terrorist killings as insane

“I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls Rest In Peace.”

President Buhari said the government had given all the needed support to the armed forces “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory, ” the president said in a statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu.
