GENEVA, Switzerland – Former Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngonzi Okonjo-Iweala has been elected Director General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO.
Dr. Ngonzi Okonjo-Iweala who had earlier been endorsed by the European Parliament was earlier today announced as the DG of WTO.
“I am pleased to announce, that the @Europarl_EN is endorsing @NOIweala as the Director-General of the @WTO. After our joint hearing on Monday we are convinced by her vision for the future of multilateralism and advise WTO members to support her bid”, MEP, Sven Simon said.
Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani Kayode announced the development on Twitter when he congratulated the former minister.
“Congratulations to our very own @NOIweala who has just been elected as the first African to ever head the World Trade Organisation. Great news for Nigeria!”, he said.
Okonjo-Iweala was Board Chair at Gavi and former Managing Director Operations World Bank. Okonjo-Iweala was until now Special Envoy to Mobilise International Economic Support for Continental Fight Against COVID-19.
