ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Anambra State Commissioner of Police,Mr John Abang has advised all policemen in the state command not to be afraid of going to hospital to check their health condition, saying it is always advisable to do health check regularly.
The Commissioner gave the advice on Tuesday while flagging off the Nigeria Police Medical Services in conjunction with Stanley Foundation free prostate screening for all Police officers above 40 years at the command headquarters, Awka Anambra state.
Abang said that it was neccssity for every policeman especially those above 40 to have regular health check by visiting hospitals at least once every year.
According to him, policemen should be going to hospital to run check most regularly for their good. He said most police men don’t bother to check their health condition,a situation he described as dangerous .
He also called on them to take the advantage of the opportunity offered by the ongoing free prostate cancer to know their status. Abang said that it is regrettable that most people don’t go to hospital until their health condition become bad .
“Many of us don’t care to check our health condition. It is only when our ailments have developed so badly that we start rushing to hospital. We should not be afriad of going for regular health check at least once in a year. I encourage officers to run comprehensive check on themselves at least once in every year. I always do check on my health and I have just done one recently. You cannot function effectively as a policeman without being healthy” he said.

According to him, going to hospital to do a check is a neccssity in the Nigerian police force and that no body can run away from it. He commended the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohamed Adamu for his healthcare welfare package to the police, saying that since he assumed office he had brought alot of innovations into police welfare packages.
Abang said regrettable ,most people only think that welfare is only about money in their pockets without considering other factors that enhance their health and productivity.
In his remarks, Anambra Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala said the state government would always work in partnership with police to provide health facilities for the force.
He urged policemen not to joke with their health by regularly visiting hospitals and checking their health condition.
According to him, prostrate cancer could be very dangerous if not detected early for medical advices and treatment. He said somebody could be looking healthy without knowing he is sick, hence the need for regular medical checkup.
