ONITSHA, Nigeria – Anambra state governor Chief Willie obiano has announced the closure of the major markets in Awka, Anambra State capital on Monday 15th June 2020 over none compliance with COVID-19 protocol.
This was contained in a statement issued by the secretary to Anambra State Government, Prof.Solo Chukwulobelu on Thursday.
He said the closure of markets in the state has become necessary given the increased cases of COVID-19 in Awka South Local Government of the state, due to none compliance with protocol as spelt out to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the market.
“This is to inform the public that effective Monday, 15th June, 2020, Eke Awka Market, in Awka South Local Government will be shut down.
“This closure is as a result of non-compliance by the market traders and customers with Covid-19 protocols, including wearing of protective face masks, provision of running water and soap for washing of hands, keeping of physical distancing and others” he said.
According to the SSG, effective from Monday, 15th June, 2020, curfew in Awka South Local Government will be from 8pm to 6am daily, until further notice.
He also said that government is putting other market leaders and local government councils inthe state on notice that a similar curfew action would be taken serious saying that markets in the local government would be closed down if it is observed that such markets do not observe Covid-19 protocols.
“All should please be guided and take the issue of observing Covid-19 protocols seriously”, he said.
