GENEVA, Switzerland – World Intellectual Property Organisation(WIPO) has elected Daren Tang as Director General of the organisation. He was elected today by the 83 member WIPO Coordinating Committee.
Daren Tang, who is the Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore will begin his tenure in September 30, 2020 when tenure of current Director General, Mr. Francis Gurry will end. The Coordination Committee, which comprises 83 member states held two rounds of voting from an initial list of six candidates.
“Kazakhstan’s candidate withdrew her candidacy ahead of the first round of voting. Following the first round, the candidate with the least votes, from Peru, was eliminated. Two other candidates – from Colombia and Ghana – withdrew their candidatures ahead of the second round of voting”, WIPO said in a statement.

Mr. Tang prevailed in the second and final round of voting with 55 votes; Ms. Binying Wang of China received 28 votes. WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property policy, services, information and cooperation. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations. WIPO assists its 193 member states in developing a balanced international IP legal framework to meet society’s evolving needs.
It provides business services for obtaining IP rights in multiple countries and resolving disputes. It delivers capacity-building programs to help developing countries benefit from using IP.

In a congratulatory message, US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo described Mr. Tang as an effective advocate for protecting intellectual property, a vocal proponent of transparency and institutional integrity, and a leader who can unify WIPO member states by forging consensus on difficult issues.
“We look forward to working closely with him during his tenure as Director General to advance WIPO’s core mission of safeguarding intellectual property as a means of driving innovation, investment, and economic opportunity, he said.
Daren Tang is from Singapore and was born in 1972. He is a holder of Bachelor of Law degree (LLB) from National University of Singapore, Masters of Law, LLM, with distinction from Georgetown University Law Centre, USA and a Fellow Institute of International Economic Law.
Daren Tang was also at the Harvard Business School, USA in 2013 for Advanced Management Programme.
