Says 6 years on, no LG elections in Anambra

ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra State chapter, chief Ndubuisi Nwobu has faulted the situation where state electoral empire conduct local government elections.
Nwobu who spoke to journalists in Anambra state said if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) takes over the responsibility of conducting local government elections it would eliminate the high level of manipulations being perpetuated by state electoral Commission.
He called on National Assembly to enact a law that would allow INEC to take the responsibility of conducting local government elections in the country to have seamless and credible succession to power.
” We accused INEC of manipulating elections in Nigeria, but state electoral Commission does not only manipulate elections but just sits in the governor’s office and write the list and declare winners. It would be better if the INEC takes over the responsibility of conducting the local elections so that people can have confidence in the process” he said.
According to him, the none conduct of elections at the local government area have created alot problems because youths are not engage.
He said that if there were proper conduct of local government elections to select who run the affairs of the third ties of government, the level of criminality will be reduced.
” In Anambra state,it is a pitable situation that six years into Willie Obiano’s government,there is no local government elections. The mere appointment of care taker committee to administer Local Government Area affairs seperate the grassroot people from government and thereby causing the youths in the area to engage in all kinds of criminal activities since they have no work to do.
The responsibility of local government have been given to contractors from the state government.
The local staff have no jobs to do. When people are not engaged there are tendencies of them engaging in the wrong values and if there are local government elections,it will reduce crimes because they are engaged” he said.
