Oraifite Killings: UASAC tells Obiano to set up impartial panel of inquiry

ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – United Anambra State Association of Canada (UASAC) has called on the State Government to set up an independent panel of inquiry to find out the immediate and remote causes of Oraifite killings.

The group made the call through a press statement jointly signed by its President Chief Chuks Ejikeme and the Public Relation Officer of the association Mr. Ifeanyi Ilukwe that was made available  to journalists in Awka, Anambra state today.

UASAC condemned the incident that took place at Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor’s home, Ifite Oraifite where houses were burnt and lives were lost. It also appealed to the people to always act within the ambit of the law. UASAC condemned in totality the extra-judicial killings of police officers and innocents citizens of the state on 2, December 2019 in Ekwusiego  Local Government Area of Anambra, stressing that  the situation could have been  handled better.

According to them , UASAC was saddened  by  the wanton destructions of lives and  properties of lawful citizens and infliction of  injuries on unsuspecting citizens who were carrying out their legitimate business

UASAC stated that such unguarded actions do not portray the image of the state in a very good light before the international community. The group appealed to the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano to investigate the matter in other to get to the root of the case and proffer a lasting solution that would restore peaceful co-existence between the citizens and police force.

“People should not take laws into their hands and act based on assumptions which would infringe on other  people’s  fundamental rights” UASAC said . The group  also appealed to the police force to handle the case with best practices and ensure  that they restore the confidence and  credibility of the police force before the citizens and  the international community.

UASAC also urged the police force to handle the case with utmost professionalism it deserves and place the image of the police in a
very professional manner. The group commiserated with the police force over the unfortunate killings of their men at Ifite Oraifite as well as the families that lost their loved ones and properties in the incidents.
