LAGOS, Nigeria – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has said told President Muhammadu Buhari that Nigeria deserves election better than what Independent National Election(INEC) as presently constituted under his watch is doing.

SERAP made the observation following reports of violence that characterised elections in Kogi and Bayelsa State. In a statement, SERAP said the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, states: “The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.”

According to SERAP, the Bayelsa and Kogi elections today have been mostly characterised by reports of violence, attacks on journalists and vote buying, adding that these kinds of elections will continue to fuel BRAZEN CORRUPTION AND IMPUNITY, with disregard for the rule of law, adding that Nigeria deserves better than this.
