7-storey Brassas Fabrics building goes up in flames

LAGOS, Nigeria – Property worth billions of naira was today burnt to ashes, following a mysterious fire which engulfed an old 7-storey building in Lagos Island.

A private security guard who wants to be identified as Akeem said the mysterious fire started around 7am on the 2nd floor of the building that later turned into a big inferno at about 9am. 

The affected plaza named Brassas Fabrics was owned by Alhaja Fausat Fusijoye (FF), who is now a Christian. The private security guard revealed that some young boys in the area and some traders made frantic efforts to put out the fire but to no avail.

As at the time of filing this report at 6pm, officials of the Lagos State Fire Service and security agents consisting the police and others are still trying to put out the fire which has consumed Brassas Fabrics building.

Some residents who spoke said they are not new to inferno in the area as it has been happening every year between November and December, except last year when it was only armed robbers that invaded the building and carted away money and fabrics .

According to them, “once the deed was done, the woman will start dashing out the remaining materials to people free of charge and within a month or two, the building will be renovated and equipped with new fabrics materials as if nothing had happened”.

Other traders near Brassas Fabrics building also insisted that the State government should first seal up the building, inaugurate investigation team to unravel what is responsible for the annual fire ritual and put adequate security measure before opening it.

The affected building is close to former Radio Nigeria building at Martins Street and borders Sanni Adewale Street in Lagos Island. Meanwhile, it was also gathered that another building at Oke-Arin and Docemo areas were on fire but have been put out.
