LONDON, U.K – Godwin Bassey, a Nigerian based in London has been sentenced to two years community order for assaulting women on multiple occasion.
He was sentenced at the Inner London Crown Court and placed on sex offenders register for five years. Bassey had earlier pleaded guilty to seven counts of exposure and one count of assault with intent to resist arrest at the same court on Friday, 31 May.
Bassey commited the offence at New Cross and Peckham areas across an 11-month period. According to Metropolitan Police, Godwin Bassey would target lone women or women walking in pairs and often used parked cars to hide behind before pouncing on them.
Bassey was arrested in Brimmington Park, SE15 on Monday, 18 February following a proactive policing operation by officers from Central South CID who had linked the series of similar offences. Bassey injured several officers in the process of arresting him, with one officer suffering a laceration to her head and ligament damage to her hand.
Detective Constable Sandy Peters, of the South Area Command Unit, said: “Bassey targeted vulnerable, lone women for his own sexual gratification, striking fear into his victims.
“He was caught after a long and complex police investigation and I would like to thank all those victims who came forward and showed great resilience to support us throughout the investigation.I would also like to thank my colleagues, several of whom were injured during arresting Bassey, who played an integral part in his arrest and conviction.
“Given the volume of his offending there may well be other victims of Bassey who have yet to come forward. If you believe you were a victim of Bassey’s but have not reported the matter to police, please call 101 and quote CAD 4120/03JUL19, where officers will ensure you receive the correct support”, the police said.
