ABUJA, Nigeria – Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) Shiites today dared the Federal Government when they came out enmass to protest continued incarceration of their leader, Sheik Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzakky.
Sheik Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzakky was arrested along with his wife, in 2015 in Zaria after a bloody protest march during which his three sons and hundreds of Shiites were massacred by the Nigerian Army for blocking their way.
Since then they have been in detention. Nigerian courts including ECOWAS court have granted them bail but the Federal Government has continued to hold them in detention, describing them as a security risk even as his health has detererorated in government facility.
This is about the third time the Shiites are marching on Abuja in one month, and this time it was very bloody.
At least 7 people including Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Usman Umar was killed as the Shiites marched through the Federal Secretariat and Three Arms Zone, shanting, free El Zakzakky.
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has accused the Shiite Islamic Movement of burning down two ambulances at the Agency’s Emergency Response and Ambulance Bays (ERABs) in Abuja.
NAMA’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Sani Datti said ERABs of the NEMA located on Ahmadu Bello Way beside the federal secretariat was attacked today with two vehicles burnt down.
”The attack was carried out by members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria commonly known as Shiites.” he told Premium Times.
