UK, Atiku sad about collapsed building at Ita-Faaji, say spare no effort in rescue operation

LAGOS, Nigeria – High Commission of the United Kingdom in Nigeria and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have expressed concern about the three storey building that collapsed at Massey Street, in Ita-Faaji area of Lagos Island, calling on the authority in Lagos not to spare any effort in the recovery and treatment of those affected in the incident.

So far the authority in Lagos have not been able to confirm casualty figures. Speaking at the site, where recovery is ongoing, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode said 25 people been have been recovered adding that some are dead.

The three storey building has private primary school on the top floor with the last two floors used for residential apartments.

Reacting to the development, the British High Commission tweeted that it is shocked to hear reports of the incident, adding that thoughts of the British people are with those who have lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

“We were shocked to hear of a building collapse involving a school in Lagos today. Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones in this tragic disaster, and we wish those injured a swift and full recovery”, the UK High Commission said.

In his reaction, Atiku Abubakar said his thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of pupils caught up in the collapsed structure and said that no resources should be spared in rescuing those trapped and treating the injured.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of pupils caught up in the collapse of the three-storey building at Ita Faji, Lagos Island. No resource should be spared in rescuing the trapped and treating the injured”, he said.
